Google Local Guide

I was standing on top of Kalsubai peak, one of the highest peak (5400+ft) of western ghat and highest peak in Indian state of  Maharstara, enjoying the awe-inspiring scenic view after a steep 4-hour long trekking. I clicked some quick pictures and uploaded them on google maps and there appeared this congratulatory popup window by saying "+15 points - you've earned points for helping others!". That was my first upload to maps and I was curious, why these points and what are the perks (Quora) of my contribution. Below is a shot from the Kalsubai peak sunset, Dec-2018.

Well, I started my Google Local Guide program with a little expectation of getting more Google One Storage to save my travel pics online. Totally unaware of its untapped potentialinitially I used to contribute to maps and get reward pointsI grew more excited as it seemed like a fun game. As I kept contributing to the Local Guide program, I continued to earn rewards on a regular basis, achieving targets, one after the other. I used to get the notifications, suggestions, appreciating emails, the number of views my photos and/or reviews received etc. from Google Local Guide team and also the amount of impact my contribution has made to the world. And the best part is, the travelled-to locations automatically get saved in my timelines on maps. Below is the snap of my 12 months timeline of (Pearl) city Hyderabad in India

Meanwhile, the program helped me to find facts, valuable insights, cost of a place or food, about religious customs, cultural lifestyle and with everything that a budget Traveller needs. As I love to explore streets, food, places, roads, customs, culture, differences, diversities and most importantly the core beliefs behind every religion, this program is of great help to achieve that. Below is the shot of a granny holding her granddaughter inside a slum area of Hyderabad (through RHA program)

Here is some useful info with links that were direct consequences of my Local Guide experience:

Below is a screenshot of my achievements as a Google Local Guide as of 03 Mar 2020:

P.S: This blog is all about my experience with Google Local Guide program in conjunction with my personal travels. If you would like to be a part of the Google Local Guide program, simply start adding your ratings, reviews, photos and places you have experienced from your personal Google account. Once added - Kudos! you are a Google Local Guide.

Everest Base Camp Trek

Mount Everest, world's highest mountain stands at a staggering height of 8,848 m (29,029 ft). To the south in Nepal, sitting Everest Base Camp at an elevation of 5,364 m / 17,598 ft offering trekkers a chance to experience the awe of the world's highest peak up close. The trek route to Everest Base Camp starts in Lukla traversing through Sagarmatha National Park & Namche Bazar before reaching EBC & descending back to Lukla covering a cumulative distance of 130km(⇌) that takes around 14 days to complete. Hiking EBC is a dream for every adventure-oriented person out there. My urge to scale it amplified way back when I completed a book titled "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer based on the 1997 Everest summit disaster that claimed 8 lives (the author was a part of that expedition). History of discovery & expeditions to scale the highest mountain of the world along with challenges created by extreme terrains, livelihoods of sherpas, thinning of air (especially o...

Secrets of Active Lifestyle

Let's start with habits & achievements to add weightage to this blog. I have been exercising consistently for the past 4.5 years, ran half-marathons, cycled 100km couple of times, motorcycled entire nation (except North-East) during lockdown, done numerous treks, been to major religious places across the country. Also habituated with novel reading from last 7 years, practising quick meditations (before & after bed) and worshipping just after the bath. Starting from 2024, included Digital-Fasting-Days (DFDs) to minimize digital penetration. Interestingly I have adopted all these though raised in a rural family with no trace of any goal-based value system. How did I pull that off? Secrets of Active Lifestyle , is just one out of my blog series Anatomy Of Habits , which explores the physical aspects of my habits. Lets dive in. Why it started In 2019, just after finishing a 2 km running event at Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad, I felt drained out with exhaustion. Though being ...

Decoding Father

My father was not exposed to education (educated till 2nd standard), can't even read. I choose to share because he himself an interesting case study of social & financial wisdom. Events took place in the backdrop of rural India. Let's start. "Do work as your own", my father always tells me. For him, work provided a reason to survive. He was born in 1953 and lost his parents early in childhood itself. Soon after he started his career working as a shepherd merely to get two times meals in a day that to staying away. He took his first annual pay of just 140 INR from the herd owner. In the year of 1974, he formally joined as a Steelman (staff) at nearby Sugar factory (Aska, Odisha) drawing an initial monthly pay of 90 INR (1080 rupees annually). He retired in 2014 with an in-hand monthly salary of 14000 INR. That is so less, his annual pay of that was 1,68,000 but he invested 1,60,000 solely on my education that year apart from sustaining a family. That brings the que...
