Google Local Guide

I was standing on top of Kalsubai peak, one of the highest peak (5400+ft) of western ghat and highest peak in Indian state of  Maharstara, enjoying the awe-inspiring scenic view after a steep 4-hour long trekking. I clicked some quick pictures and uploaded them on google maps and there appeared this congratulatory popup window by saying "+15 points - you've earned points for helping others!". That was my first upload to maps and I was curious, why these  points  and what are the  perks  ( Quora ) of my contribution.
